Bartica man fined $200K after admitting to DUI – Guyana Times

…460 traffic tickets made out on Monday

Mikel De Freitas of Fifth Avenue, Bartica was on Tuesday fined $200,000, with an alternative of six months’ imprisonment, after pleading guilty before Bartica Magistrate Crystel Lambert to driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Police contend that De Freitas was driving a vehicle while his breath alcohol level had exceeded the prescribed limit. Upon his pleading guilty, the magistrate imposed the sentence on him.
The Police have said that a total of 178 traffic tickets had been issued on Monday to errant motorists whose driving had exceeded the speed limit. In addition, 460 cases have been made out on Monday, 178 of which are for speeding, while three are for DUI.

The Police have also said that sustained education programmes via lectures at schools, and to drivers, bar owners and those gathered at entertainment spots across the country complement their sustained enforcement efforts which are aimed at ensuring full compliance with traffic laws and respect for the road and all categories of road users.
Speeding is not the answer, and driving under the influence is not an option, the Police have said.
Regional traffic ranks have been warned to ensure visibility by day and night, along with roving patrols, complemented by CCTV cameras identifying congestion early, which must be addressed without delay. All equipment in use is calibrated and administered by competently trained traffic ranks, the Police have said.
